Project Story: “The Weight of the Root”

This story focuses on the symbolism of being trapped, the theme of decay, and the long road to regaining your sense of self (your “roots”).

The title and visual elements speak to the feeling of being rooted and entangled in a relationship that was slowly decaying, causing a profound loss of one’s own sense of self. The deliberate incorporation of visible decaying roots and textures symbolizes the emotional damage and the slow, arduous process of separation. Ultimately, the piece represents the resilience and strength required to cut those ties, break free, and begin the necessary journey back to self-recovery.

The Weight of the Root

This deeply personal piece is a photo-manipulation created during a prolonged and complex period of struggle and loss. It serves as a symbolic self-portrait of that time, reflecting the intense emotional battle to reclaim personal identity and freedom.

Process Overview: “Symbolism through Digital Texture”

This section highlights the technical shift to photo-editing and the specific manipulation of the root imagery.

This project is a dedicated photo-manipulation and editing piece, utilizing Adobe Photoshop to create emotional narrative rather than painted realism. The process involved layering, scaling, and duplicating original source imagery of tree roots to create a dense, smothering texture. The technical focus was on:

Process: Symbolism through Digital Texture

  • Building Entanglement: Meticulously integrating the root textures and shadows to create the illusion of physical entanglement and weight.
  • Symbolic Decay: Using textures and color grading to emphasize a feeling of decay and rot, reflecting the deterioration of the underlying circumstances.
  • Self-Expression: Employing deep shadow and symbolic contrast to channel and externalize a highly internal and difficult emotional narrative.
