Project Story: “Vanellope: Stylistic Translation”

This portrait is a piece of character fan art, paying tribute to Vanellope von Schweetz from the Disney film Wreck-It Ralph. The primary objective was a technical challenge: to translate a highly stylized 3D animated character into a painterly 2D portrait while retaining her energetic and mischievous personality.

The focus was on maintaining her iconic exaggerated features—the large, expressive eyes and the specific texture of her hair—and using realistic shading techniques to give depth and realism to a cartoon design. It demonstrates the ability to adapt realistic rendering skills to a non-realistic subject.

Process: Translating Exaggeration

Executed in Adobe Photoshop, this 2D piece utilized the layering and blending methods typical of my work, but applied them to an animated subject.

The technical focus was on preserving the character’s core design language while introducing digital painting techniques. This required using subtle shading to give weight and depth to the exaggerated facial structure and large eyes. Particular attention was paid to rendering the hair to achieve a balanced look that is both stylized (to match the character) and textured (to fit the painterly medium).
