Project Story: “The Genesis of Style”

This section highlights the history, the intended mood, and the raw inspiration, making it a significant developmental piece.

While the original pencil work relied on black and white to convey a dark mood—a preference I often hold for this style—this version represents a transition point. It documents an early attempt to take that foundation and translate the raw, emotional energy of the line work into a structured digital medium, exploring how light and color could deepen the narrative of the original form.

The Moment of Shock: The Genesis of Style

This piece holds a unique place in my portfolio, originating from a raw, expressive pencil sketch done years ago. Inspired by the chaotic, intense atmosphere of Luc Lefèbvre’s comics, the drawing captures a strong, exaggerated moment of immediate shock and surprise.

Process: From Pencil to Digital Experimentation

The creation of this 2D piece was primarily a technical exercise in converting traditional art into a colored digital format. The original drawing was completed in pencil and deliberately uncolored, as I initially felt the chaotic atmosphere was best served by pure line and shadow.

This digital version, executed in Photoshop using a Wacom tablet, was a learning challenge. The focus was not realism, but rather:

  • Colorizing Line Art: Learning how to apply a painted digital layer underneath existing expressive line work.
  • Expressive Palette: Using contrasting, bold colors (like the intense purple background) to enhance the feeling of suddenness and shock, pushing the atmospheric boundaries of the original sketch.
